It's estimated release date isn't until November of 2009 but we all know that these things change. The plot...As homicide detective Thomas Craven investigates the death of his activist daughter, he uncovers not only her secret life, but a corporate cover-up and government collusion that attracts an agent tasked with cleaning up the evidence.

Donner directed and produced the four previous "Lethal Weapon" films, which starred Gibson.

The Los Angeles Times said Donner is not involved in plans to make a fifth installment in the franchise because producer Joel Silver wants original "Lethal Weapon" scribe Shane Black to direct the next film based on a script Black wrote.

"Mel turned it down," Donner told the newspaper. "I would like to think that Mel turned it down because I wasn't involved. Knowing Mel, I would like to think that. Would that be the kind of thing he does? It sure would be."

The Times said Gibson's representatives declined to make an official comment, but gave the impression Donner's suspicions were on the money.

Donner also directed Gibson in "Conspiracy Theory" and "Maverick."

The Times said Silver and and Donner had a falling out several years ago and Donner had been working on his own "Lethal Weapon 5," which he was confident he could have convinced Gibson to headline.

"The project is pretty much dead in the water unless someone had the sense to come to me," Donner told the Times.

The son of Hollywood actor Mel Gibson today donated $50,000 to the Kidney Foundation of Fiji (KFOF) on behalf of his parents.

“He told me his family loves Fiji,” Foundation Secretary Bernadette Rounds-Ganilau said about Milo Gibson’s donation.

The director of "The Passion of the Christ" and star of the "Mad Max" films owns 5,411-acre Mago Island in Fiji’s Lau Group, which he purchased from Japan's Tokyu Corp. for about US$15 million.

Rounds-Ganilau said she was approached a number of years ago by the Gibson family's Fiji manager, Martin Livingston, who informed her that the family was interested in donating a dialysis machine to the Foundation.

The Fiji Dialysis Centre at the CWM Hospital has seven dialysing stations, and with all machines and peripherals compatible with each other.

She said the Gibson donation comes at a time when consumables for the first quarter of 2009 are being ordered and paid for in advance.

"We are immensely grateful for the donation and opportune timing,” said Rounds-Ganilau.

Rounds-Ganilau said the Haemodialysis is an expensive life saving treatment but necessary for the growing number of patients with end stage kidney disease in Fiji.

She said the KFOF hopes to mount an intensive prevention programme in the community within the next few months.

“The Interim government has expressed the hope that the KFOF would be able to set up other dialysis centres in the north and west of Fiji in the years to come,” she said.

Lethal Weapon 5 on the way?

Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are in talks to make Lethal Weapon 5, it's been reported.

Shane Black, who wrote the original 1987 movie, has penned a new script and the stars are said to be interested in reprising their roles as cops Riggs and Murtaugh. No deal has been signed.

The sequel would see Riggs teaming up with the retired Murtaugh for one final case before quitting the force.

Mel Gibson Movie to Be Filmed in Northampton

NORTHAMPTON, Mass (Abc40) Northampton will be the backdrop of a new Mel Gibson movie. The thriller called "Edge Of Darkness" will be filmed in the Bay State between August and December.

It will become one of several movies that have been -at least partially- shot in Northampton over the years. "Malice," with Nicole Kidman and Alec Baldwin in 1993 was shot in the downtown area. Parts of the 1966 film version of the Broadway hit "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" were shot at Smith College. More recently, the Academy Award winner, "The Cider House Rules," came to town.

People interested in being apart of Mel Gibson's movie can attend a casting call on August 9 from 10 AM to 4 PM at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Northampton.

It’s all supposed to be stealthy and secret, but Robert DeNiro is this close to signing on to co-star in the made-in-Mass. movie “Edge of Darkness.”

The crime thriller, based on a popular BBC miniseries, stars Mel Gibson as a seasoned Boston police detective investigating the death of his activist daughter, played by Aussie actress Bojana Novakovic.

The creepy flick, which will be directed by Martin Campbell and written by Oscar-winning “The Departed” screenscribe William Monahan, will shoot in and around Boston and the Berkshires from Aug. 18 to December.

Mel Gibson talks about being diagnosed as bipolar in a new documentary about the NIDA acting class of 1977.

The Hollywood star was interviewed by his classmate Sally McKenzie about his memories as a student in a stellar year that included Judy Davis, Steve Bisley, Robert Menzies, Annie Byron, Debra Lawrance, Linda Newton and the theatre director Peter Kingston.

"I had really good highs but some very low lows," Gibson said. "I found out recently I'm manic depressive."

While the interview dates back to 2002, the actor and director, who made headlines with a drunken outburst two years ago, has rarely talked about the condition.

McKenzie, who wrote and directed the lively Acting Class Of 1977, which screens on ABC2 on Sunday week, said yesterday that it seemed like a genuine comment but she did not want to delve further.

Other NIDA students had no idea that Gibson and Davis would be so successful.

"Theatre was very much the focus of our training," McKenzie said. "The thought of people being stars [in film and television] or having stellar careers was not really considered … It was all concentrated on the work and not on what was going to happen down the track."

The actress who plays Mystic Marj in the TV series Mortified remembers the young Gibson as "very polite, self-deprecating, shy, certainly talented and just a really nice person … even a little bit embarrassed about the whole acting thing."

And Davis, who declined invitations to be in the documentary? McKenzie said she was "intense, private, very talented and idiosyncratic".

ROBERT Downey Jr's come a long way from his bad boy image, but he's full of admiration for those who've broken their boundaries like co-star Gwyneth Paltrow, and friend Mel Gibson
A half-smoked cigar rests in an ashtray alongside a half-empty pitcher of what appears to be a protein shake.

Quite a contrast, but as Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr points out, he's enjoying the cigar far more than the health shake.

‘‘This is s---,'' he says, taking a gulp before breaking into a bright smile and plonking down playfully in an armchair.

He may not embrace health shakes, but the 43-year-old is proof of just how much a person's life can change in 10 years.

With time spent in jail and a history of drug abuse, Downey Jr's life was a mess in the '90s, a far cry from the ‘‘together'' man talking up his latest turn as billionaire industrialist and genius inventor Tony Stark in action thriller Iron Man.

Based on an original Marvel comic, the film revolves around Stark, the CEO of the US Government's top weapons contractor, and how his once-carefree life is stripped away to reveal a
softer side after he's captured while touring Afghanistan.

Asked if he has been misunderstood, Downey shrugs.

‘‘I don't know. I think I have been misunderstood and understood just like anybody,'' he says.

‘‘Pick out a name of anyone you know and there are times when things aren't what they seem and what I have noticed now is that my life is pretty simple and together and I am not in the middle of any desperate struggle. Some of that is just a function of age. Some of this stuff just takes time and you get caught up in something and you have to go through it.''

Though headlines around the world still read ‘‘bad boy Robert Downey Jr'', this former hellraiser scoffs at them and so does his wife, producer Susan Levin.

‘‘If you want to make my wife laugh her ass off you need to just read those types of newspaper headlines,'' he says. ‘‘It's just ridiculous that notion because that's not who I am today. It's something that happened last century.''

Looking over Sydney Harbour, Downey recalls his last trip Down Under with his wife, who produced the doomed Paris Hilton horror vehicle House of Wax on the Gold Coast, almost four years ago.

The star enjoys the laid-back Australian way of life and the filmmaking heavyweights the nation has produced, including his good mate Mel Gibson.

Both known for their controversies, Downey gushes about the man he met 18 years ago while working on action comedy Air America.

Gibson paid the star's insurance bond for 2003's The Singing Detective when studios were nervous about having the once wayward actor working on their films.

Downey, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in the title role of 1992 film Chaplin, says he's looking forward to seeing Gibson when he returns to Los Angeles and thought of his friend while flying into Sydney.

‘‘I was just thinking about him this morning and really looking forward to having a coffee with him because it's always fascinating to find out what's going on on planet Gibson,'' he says.

Though 52-year-old Gibson's drunken anti-Semitic rant last year landed him in hot water, Downey says the dual Academy Award winner has lost little support in Hollywood.

‘‘I think anybody would be happy to work with him and I just think that he can pretty much write his own ticket,'' he says.

Downey smiles as he recalls a life lesson he learned through Gibson. After their time on Air America and just before Gibson's next role in Hamlet, executives were telling the Australian he should try his hand at directing, at which the star baulked.

Gibson's creative flair behind the camera has since captivated audiences around the world with films such as Braveheart, Apocalypto and The Passion of the Christ.

‘‘Through him I have just seen the remarkable potential to get yourself out of a way of being perceived. He was like, ‘I don't want to be a director', then he broadened his horizons and has been so much more successful as a director than he has as an actor and whoever would have thought that was possible?'' he says.

Working opposite some of the world's most glamorous women is all in a day's work for Downey, but he admits he had to turn on the charm to lure Gwyneth Paltrow into the role of his sexy personal assistant and love interest, Pepper Potts, in Iron Man.

‘‘I told her she was going to be in a hot dress and that people were going to remember that side of her that she and everyone else had forgotten,'' he says.

‘‘I hate to say it, but she is kind of royalty in a sense because she is one of few actresses who has avoided so many of the pitfalls we struggle with and it's not for no reason. There is something about the essence of who she is.''

Gibson told reporters outside Veracruz's Ignacio Allende prison that it is hard for him to speak in front of microphones. But the Veracruz state director of cinema said the purpose of Sunday's visit was to see locations. Prospero Rebolledo said Gibson's people are just looking for locations for a film. Gibson filmed his 2006 movie, Apocalypto, in Veracruz state.

Hollywood actor Mel Gibson has succeeded in his quest to take control of the Dendy Cinema chain, claiming the prize for $21 million after a drawn out and bloody takeover battle.

Entertainment company Becker Group announced on Friday that it had sold the cinema chain, known for its preference for screening art-house flicks, to Mr Gibson's company Icon Film Distribution Pty Ltd.

About 75 per cent of Becker Group was recently acquired by regional television broadcaster Prime Media Group Ltd for about $24 million.

As part of that deal, Becker's film assets, including the Dendy chain, were supposed to be sold back to major Becker shareholders Russell and Richard Becker for $15.5 million.

But the sale was scrapped last year after another company associated with Mr Gibson, Dolphete Pty Ltd, threw a spanner in the works by convincing the Takeovers Panel to intervene.

Dolphete accused Prime and Becker of acting in concert and not giving Becker shareholders enough information about the cinema asset sale.

At the time, Prime and Becker had similar interests, with hospital magnate Paul Ramsay holding 41 per cent of Prime and 19 per cent of Becker.

Dolphete was understood to be behind a counter bid for Becker shares, but it was unable to stop Prime taking control of the group despite more rumblings to the Takeovers Panel.

Becker said the sale of the Dendy Cinemas and its film distribution assets to Icon marked the conclusion of a competitive bidding process.

"Icon was selected based on various parameters including value, timing and transaction certainty," Becker said.

Becker managing director Warwick Syphers, who is also head of Prime, said Becker would now focus on growing its television production assets.

Prime shares closed unchanged at $3.50 after rising as high as $3.60.

Dendy operates six cinemas: two in Sydney, two in Melbourne, one in Brisbane and one in Canberra.

Writer Sues Mel Gibson Over 'Passion'

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A screenwriter sued Mel Gibson and his production company on Monday, claiming he was misled by the actor-director into accepting a small payment for writing "The Passion of the Christ," and was refused extra money when the film became a blockbuster.

Benedict Fitzgerald claimed that when he was asked to write a script about the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, Gibson told him the movie would cost between $4 million to $7 million, according to the lawsuit filed in Superior Court. Fitzgerald also alleged Gibson promised he wouldn't receive any money from the film and any profit would be distributed to people who worked on the movie.

Gibson stated he didn't want "money on the back of what he considered a personal gift to his (Roman Catholic) faith," the lawsuit said.

Fitzgerald, who shared screenwriting credits with Gibson, claimed he agreed to a "a salary substantially less than what he would have taken had he known the true budget for the film," which the lawsuit claimed had an estimated budget of $25 million to $50 million. The 2004 movie went on to gross several hundred million dollars.

The lawsuit doesn't specify how much Fitzgerald was paid for his services.

An after-hours call to Gibson's publicist was not immediately returned.

The suit claims fraud, breach of contract, unjust enrichment and seeks unspecified damages. It also names Gibson's Icon Productions company as a defendant.

Mel Gibson to attend IFTAs

Mel Gibson is to receive an award at this year's IFTAs for 'outstanding contribution to world cinema'.

The Australian actor and director will attend the Irish Film & Television Awards ceremony in Dublin's Gaiety Theatre on February 17.

Gibson has starred in over 48 film and television productions in the last three decades and is also the co-founder of Icon Productions. Having made a name for himself acting in blockbusters like Mad Max and Lethal Weapon, he made his directorial debut in 1993. Since then, he has gone on to helm some of the biggest productions of the past couple of years, including Braveheart, The Passion Of The Christ and Apocalypto.

Mel Gibson has Irish connections on both his mother’s and father’s side. His late mother, Anne Patricia Reilly, was born in Co. Longford and his great grandfather on his father’s side was Patrick Mylott, who moved from Ireland to Australia in the late 1800s to escape the potato famine.

Mel is named after the Church of Saint Mel in Longford, his mother’s birthplace, while his middle name, Colmcille, is that of the diocese where his mother was born and also the name of a well-known Irish saint.

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) — Mel Gibson met with several Costa Rican government ministers to discuss setting up a film production company in the Central American country.

The 51-year-old actor/director met Tuesday with the ministers of commerce, tourism and economy at an exclusive hotel in the Costa Rican capital of San Jose.

"I'm here exploring opportunities to establish my film business in Costa Rica," Gibson told Channel 13 on Wednesday.

Gibson, star of Hollywood blockbusters such as the "Lethal Weapon" series and director of last year's Mayan epic "Apocalypto," said he is considering Costa Rica because "it's a beautiful country, very stable."

"I like its people a lot and they have very good coffee."

Gibson already owns a house in Guanacaste on the country's Pacific coast.

MAD Max star Mel Gibson was put on kidnap alert yesterday over his new home in Costa Rica.

The actor plans to move his wife Robyn and their seven children to the £13million ranch 300 miles from the capital San Jose.

And he seems determined to ignore official US government warnings that the area is prime bandit country.

A State Department briefing claims all American visitors are “potential targets for criminals and kidnappers” and should never travel alone.

It adds: “Local law enforcement agencies have limited capabilities and do not operate according to US standards.”

And an American consular official said: “All US citizens should exercise extreme caution.”

But Mel, 51, has already upset locals. The previous owner employed 13 staff who rented houses on the estate. And they fear losing their jobs if he shuts down farming operations on the 402-acre spread.

Mel has already indicated he plans to use it for movie location shoots.

A business source close to the actor said: “Most locals are enthusiastic about their wealthy new neighbour but others are very worried about their livelihoods.

“He will need intense security for his family in an area where urban and tourist development is minimal and most of the inhabitants are poorly-paid farmers

“Unless they are closely guarded, Mel’s family could find themselves prime targets for bandits and thieves in an area where help will be a very long way away.”

Mel’s ranch spans a densely-wooded, mountainous area in Guanacaste province on Costa Rica’s northern Pacific coast.

Six years ago, the Hollywood star and his producing partner, Bruce Davey, announced they were forming a production company with the leading talent agency Shanahan Management, which represents such A-listers as Nicole Kidman, Toni Collette and Geoffrey Rush.

Icon Shanahan Productions was launched at the same time as a new distribution operation, and there were high hopes that it could produce a new generation of Australian films for international audiences.

But the company has now closed its Sydney office - and its creative director, Sally Chesher, has departed - without a single Icon Shanahan film being made.

The closest it came was the part-financing of the drama The Black Balloon, by Icon's distribution and sales agency arms. Icon Shanahan brought Collette to the film, a coming-of-age story from the director Elissa Down which is due in cinemas early next year. Collette's co-stars include the model Gemma Ward, Rhys Wakefield and Luke Ford.

Before that, Icon was involved in a production venture with the Australian arm of 20th Century Fox that dissolved after three years without making a film. Even earlier, a planned partnership between Gibson and the producer Pat Lovell also led to nothing.

While Gibson and Davey have been successful producers in the US, making such movies as Braveheart, What Women Want, The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto, they have come up bone dry in this country.

The chief executive of Icon's Australian operations, Mark Gooder, points to the difficulty of finding strong films that can work internationally.

"Everyone has good intentions to make as many films as they possibly can out of Australia," he says from Los Angeles. "But when it comes down to it, what are those stories that will resonate and travel overseas?

"… You talk to any producer and any studio in Australia. Are they all sitting on fantastic material that they're holding back from making? No.

"I think everyone finds it's a bit of a struggle to find strong material."

Gooder described the office closure as a "refocusing" rather than a withdrawal from Australian filmmaking. He will continue developing films from Los Angeles and has high hopes for Icon's chances under the Federal Government's new 40 per cent rebate for film production.

One project that has been in development and could still reach production, he says, is the romantic comedy/drama The Girl Most Likely, starring Pia Miranda.

The event was the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Petra Group and the Royal Society South-East Asia Rainforest Research Programme (SEARRP).

Petra will sponsor the latter's rainforest ecology research programme in Sabah (StarBiz: Petra plays its part in conservation)

Gibson, who last directed Apocalypto, which was set in an ancient Mayan jungle settlement, is on a two-week vacation in Malaysia. He was at the ceremony to lend his support to Petra Group's participation in the research programme on how to conserve the rainforest.

“I'm really proud and happy to be a witness to an agreement such as this. I've backed a lot of good causes – environmental and humanitarian,” he said.

He also cited a similar rainforest conservation project in El Mirador, Guatemala, which he strongly supported.

Petra Group president and chief executive officer Datuk Vinod Sekhar said the group had also “contributed in a small way” to the Guatemalan project.

Gibson also backs Green Rubber Global, a Petra Group unit in the United States that will operate a tyre recycling plant in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

He expressed his intention to visit the local rainforest and Danum Valley Field Centre, where the SEARRP programme is undertaken.

Australian Gibson got his first break in 1979 in Mad Max, and later in the United States with The Bounty (1984).

He is also famous for his work in the Lethal Weapon series with Danny Glover.

After spending more than two decades as a leading man, Gibson ventured into directing with Braveheart and was immediately recognised with two Oscars in 1996.

Afterward, the two men had lunch at the presidential palace.

Gibson has visited the country many times as a tourist, said Krista Kepfer, a spokeswoman for Berger.

"He is very interested in Guatemala as a tourist destination and in the culture," she said.

Over the weekend, Gibson visited the Mayan ruins of El Mirador deep in the northern Peten jungle, Kepfer said.

He keeps investing his "Passion of the Christ" money into the church he built in Agoura Hills, Calif.

Last year, Gibson parked another $8.2 million in his AP Reilly Foundation, the tax-free entity that takes care of his Holy Family Catholic Church.

Gibson's church is not recognized by the Roman Catholic Church because it does not acknowledge the authority of the pope or the Vatican or the doctrine known as Vatican II. Gibson and many of his fellow congregants are Holocaust deniers, as is Gibson's father, who has been known to contribute to neo-Nazi publications.

Gibson, nevertheless, perseveres. According to a federal tax filing obtained exclusively by this column, the foundation now has $30 million in its coffers, up from $22 million last year.

The church sits on about 11 acres of land owned by the Foundation and worth around $3 million, according to public documents.

Let's put this into perspective. Los Angeles Catholic Big Brothers and Big Sisters only has $1.6 million in its till. The Malibu Roman Catholic Church, which is recognized by the archdiocese, supports 600 families. It has a fraction of Holy Family's budget. But Holy Family is said to accommodate about 70 families altogether. That's quite a difference.

Thanks to "The Passion of the Christ" and his anti-Semitic rant last year when he was arrested in Malibu, Gibson is no longer a significant Hollywood player. But he obviously has money, and he is using it as he sees fit.

Mel, who was not present in the Malibu, Calif. court, got major kudos from the judge who told Mel's attorney "I truly believe the rehabilitation in this case is being very effective." The judge added that he would eventually like to see Mel, but at this point "it's counterproductive to have him in the courtroom."

On "Apocalypto," Mel Gibson found that using the Panavision Genesis gave him a unique look.

He points to a scene where the film's hero is chased through the jungle by men carrying torches. Not only was he able to shoot using just the torchlight, but, "When you open the shutter 360 degrees, the quality of movement takes on a different quality that you don't get on film.

"The fire had a liquid thing that doesn't happen on film. The greenery and the stuff he's running by has this incredible blur effect; you can stop on any frame and it's like a Monet painting. It makes him look like he's going even faster than he really is."

Gibson was also excited about seeing those images with digital projection at the ArcLight theater in Hollywood.

"It was astounding," he says. "I think I like the (projected) image (more) than the digital image that was scanned onto film. It was almost like 3-D, it was so great and clear. And of course there's less deterioration of the actual material as you watch it." Referring to the degradation of tradition film, he adds: "You make this pristine image you want to send off like your child to school, but it comes home by 3 p.m. with a nosebleed."

For Gibson, the bottom line is simple: "I think the digital has caught the film. I don't think it's a wannabe anymore. It's an 'is.' It's a very high-class alternative."

A Santa Monica legislator is pushing a bill that would make it a crime for public safety employees to sell information to media outlets in an effort to clamp down on payments made by celebrity tabloids.

"This is a breach of the public trust, and if violated should be a crime," wrote bill author, Assem. Julia Brownley, D-Santa Monica.

Brownley introduced the bill at the request of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. The assemblywoman said she has no direct knowledge that information was sold in the Mel Gibson case, but said in the instant information age, Internet sites may be paying public safety officers for access to immediate information.

"In the Mel Gibson case, we know that once he was accused it was within that evening that he had a mug shot and there was a story," Brownley said. "So does that taint his right to a fair trial? I think possibly so."

Brownley's bill, AB 920, targets peace officers, public safety employees and court employees. It also affects media outlets. Any reporter who offers to pay public safety officials for information could be subject to a misdemeanor under the legislation.

The measure unanimously passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee this week. It has no registered opposition.

Mel Gibson has succeeded in banning a beer from a small Danish brewery, because it was called Braveheart - the same name of his 1995 Oscar-winning movie. The Hollywood star was angry the beer from Midtfyns Bryghus was called Braveheart, and even threatened to sue for the brewery's use of the name.
But the brewery's 72-year-old owner Keld Andersen initially refused to give in to pressure from Gibson, and only backed down after consulting with the Danish Patent and Trademark Council.
Andersen claimed the filmmaker couldn't possibly copyright the name as a Romanian king from the 15th century was called Braveheart and a silent film from the 1920s was titled Brave Heart.
He says, "I was certain I had a good case against those big guys in Hollywood, but evidently it wasn't enough. Gibson gets his way and the brewer admits defeat. There's nothing we can do so we'll stop making the Braveheart beer."

This past Friday, (thank God I had the day off) I turned on my laptop and searched the news stories for something to blog about. Much to my suprise I came across a news story titled Mel Goes Balllistic--"Lady F--k Off" TMZ, my arch enemy.

So I prepaired for battle once again. Memories of last summer flashed through my mind when I set up basecamp in my living room battling comment after comment on that vicious website. I sign each comment pretty much the same way ADMF Lisa, or A Devoted Mel Fan.

As I posted my first comment of what I thought would be one of many, I noticed a change, 90% of all the comments were defending Mel, I was not alone in my war against Harvey Levin. By the way last summer I defended Mel so much on the TMZ website, that some of my comments were deleted. They were there for a while then poof, gone. No bad language on my part, I stayed respectable because I wanted people to listen to what I had to say. Even now my latest comment on Mel took hours too show up, I'm just saying... it's kind if weird. Harvey claims it's nothing personal against Mel but I don't believe him.

By this time my phone is ringing off the hook and everyone is asking me if I heard about Mel. "Yes, you know I'm on it already " I quickly relpy.

I go back to the TMZ website and even more people are defending Mel. Wow, this is so cool. So at this point I look at the pictures that TMZ have posted for what really was the first time, and that's when it happened again. You know, that 'Oh my God he's so hot thing' Mel had this stern look on his face, strong hands, and a, dare should I say it, a...FU look about him. Thank goodness I was sitting down or when I noticed the white wife beater tee under his faded looking red shirt, my knees buckled. "I bet he has jeans on too" I said to myself. Jeans, a suit, I don't care, I have a Mel thing. I just want to say THANK YOU PEOPLE THAT POSTED POSITIVE COMMENTS ABOUT MEL OVER THE WEEKEND. IT'S GOOD TO KNOW THAT I HAVE ALLIES.

LOS ANGELES - Mel Gibson exchanged angry words with a university professor who challenged the accuracy of his film "Apocalypto" at an on-campus screening. Gibson was answering questions from the crowd at California State University, Northridge, Thursday night when Alicia Estrada, an assistant professor of Central American studies, accused the actor-director of misrepresenting the Mayan culture in the movie. Gibson directed an expletive at the woman, who was removed from the crowd.

"In no way was my question aggressive in the way that he responded to it," Estrada said. "These are questions that my peers, my colleagues, ask me every time I make a presentation. These are questions I pose to my students in the classroom."

Gibson's publicist, Alan Nierob, characterized the professor as "a heckler."

"The woman ... was rude and disruptive inasmuch as the event organizers had to escort her out," Nierob said.

Lauren Robeson, editor-in-chief of the campus newspaper, the Daily Sundial, said Gibson denounced Estrada as a troublemaker.

"It was a brief disruption to an otherwise interesting, stimulating event from our students' perspectives," said university spokesman John Chandler. "The students were very appreciative of Mr. Gibson being there. He spent a lot of time answering questioernational headlines. The R-rated epic about the decline of Mayan civilization shows Mayan rulers slitting throats and beheading and ripping the beating hearts from the chests of their enemies.

Human sacrifice among the Mayans has been well-documented in recent years and is accepted as fact by most anthropologists, knocking down a previous theory that the culture did not take part in such bloody rituals.

However, there are some scholars and Indian activists who still believe the human sacrifice accounts are false or overblown, and an attempt by racist scientists to paint the culture as violent.

"This isn't the Mayan culture," Juan Tiney, leader of the National Indian and Farmer Committee, Guatemala's biggest Mayan organization, told the AP. "Although it might be part of it, there was also culture, economics, astronomical wealth and language. ... It discredits a people to present them in this manner."

Gibson "did his homework and consulted with world authorities on this matter," Nierob said.

"Apocalypto" has grossed more than $100 million worldwide, and it earned three Academy Award nominations.

Every now and then I come out of my Mel induced fan frenzy to comment on other things. The movie 300 is one of those times. It is a great movie, beautiful to look at, the acting is out standing. It will make you laugh, make you cry. You'll want to stand up and cheer out loud. It makes you want to be a Spartan.

One reviewer called it the poor mans Braveheart, at first I took offense, (as I tend to do when people talk about Mel. A lot of bad press can make a fan paranoid) then I saw the movie and I understood what he was saying. 300 is darker, dirtier, and yes even bloodier than Braveheart, but it will not win an Oscar unless the Academy is taken over by Quentin Tarantino. Both movies however will give you the same feeling, fight for something, fight with pride, die with pride and be proud of what you achieved and the legacy that you will leave behind.

Remember the 300.

PANAMA CITY, Panama: Mel Gibson, fresh off his Mexico-based epic "Apocalypto," is thinking of heading south to film a movie in Panama, tourism officials said Monday.
Gibson, accompanied on his visit by his 24-year-old son, Edward, dined Sunday night with tourism spokesman and singer Ruben Blades, who suggested he do a remake of the 1950 film noir "Panic in the Streets," in Panama, the Panama Tourism Bureau said in a news release.

I don't watch that many Japanese movies. One I saw recently that really impressed me was "The Passion of the Christ." It's a movie everyone should see, whether they're Christians or not. It's heavy -- but that's why I think it's worth watching. I also liked "Braveheart."
But that's supposed to be a movie for guys.
Right, it is. And so is "Passion," for that matter. Girls start screaming when they see it. So I guess that means I'm a guy (laughs). I really like Mel Gibson's eyes -- they're beautiful. I like the way they move.

AS Mel Gibson stirs interest in the once-repressed Mayan languages with his film Apocalypto, they are enjoying a real-life renaissance in Guatemala's mountains and jungles.A bilingual education drive in the mostly Mayan country is reviving 21 languages pushed aside since the Spanish conquest 500 years ago, some of which were close to extinction.
The club-wielding, human-sacrificing stars of Gibson's movie speak entirely in Yucatec Mayan, still used today by hundreds of thousands of people in Mexico and Belize.
It is only one of 30 Mayan languages descended from a single, 4000-year-old tongue and spoken by about five million people in Guatemala, Mexico, Belize and Honduras.
Each of Guatemala's Mayan languages is being standardised with dictionaries and school grammar books. The internet has made it easier to create and distribute.
"There has been a significant growth of young people speaking Mayan languages," Maya lawyer Amilcar Pop said.

Twentieth Century Fox Mexico bows Mel Gibson's Mayan epic "Apocalypto" today in Mexico. Fox is releasing the film on 300 prints -- midsized for the market -- and expects to nab the No. 1 spot and 15 million pesos ($1.4 million) in the opening weekend.

Fox estimated the pic would earn less than $4 million during its run, but exhibs were more optimistic, expecting it to earn more than $6 million.

Film managed to nab a B-15 rating, which requires kids younger than 15 be accompanied by an adult, after distribs feared landing a C rating (similar to R) due to the pic's graphic violence.

Mexico is the first Latin American market to see the film and should provide a litmus test for other markets with populations of indigenous peoples and pre-Colombian cultures. Fox has rights for the entire region.
Francisco Lopez, Fox Latam's regional marketing manager, said the distrib is marketing the film more as an action film in some markets -- including Mexico -- and would play up the cultural aspect in campaigns in the more European-centered markets such as Argentina and Chile, which have tiny indigenous populations.

Mel doesn't care if some people won't forgive him for his anti-Semitic remarks that were made last summer.
The "Apocalypto" director - who said, "Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world" after being stopped by police for drunk driving last July - says if people cannot forgive and forget it's not his problem.
He insisted, "I have moved on and some folks won't, and that's not my problem. A lot of people were very understanding and kind. It was a good lesson, and I'm thankful for it. The outcome has been positive out of a lot of negativity."
The "Lethal Weapon" actor is also unhappy with people trying to analyze his beliefs and mental state after the event.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Actor and producer Mel Gibson hit back on Monday at accusations his "Apocalypto" film misrepresents Mayan Indians as savages, accusing opponents of not doing their research.
"Those who criticise the movie should do their homework. I did," Gibson told reporters at a screening of the film in Mexico City.
Indigenous activists in Guatemala, once home to a large part of the former Mayan empire in southern Mexico and northern Central America, say "Apocalypto" is racist.

The film has yet to open in Mexico and Guatemala but pirated DVDs are available on the streets and heart-pounding trailers have been shown in movie theaters.
Mayan critics of "Apocalypto" say scenes of scary-looking Indians with bone piercings and scarred faces hurling spears and sacrificing humans promote stereotypes about their culture.

A contrite Mel Gibson puts the past behind him with an ambitious new epic, Apocalypto, which hits Australian screens today.
He's contrite, but Mel Gibson is moving on from his drunken diatribe with typical epic zeal
It would be an understatement to say that Mel Gibson, Oscar-winning director and Hollywood star of more than two decades, has not had the best 12 months.
Yet as Gibson chats en route to his office in Los Angeles, he is talkative and clearly keen to put the alcohol-induced tirade of last July behind him. He remains genuinely contrite, but matter-of-fact, as he calmly and sincerely discusses what happened in his only Australian interview.
"I got a skinful and mouthed off, which is not coming from a good place, but I'm moving on from that," he says.
However, he looks at that experience, "as a gift, because it's made me really scratch my head and focus on a couple of things that I needed to".
"It's working out real positive, and hopefully that's reflected in other lives that I'll touch."
Yet the actor/director feels the press focuses excessively on the transgressions of the rich and famous.
"Everybody screws up and I tell you, if you ask everybody in the world to raise their hand if they never said something vicious, something that they regretted or something stupid, there wouldn't be many people who would be able to raise those hands."
Gibson - whose latest directorial feature, Apocalypto, opens today - is no stranger to controversy, thanks to 2004's The Passion Of The Christ.
Much to Gibson's surprise, Passion resulted in unexpected box office gold, which Gibson says, "told me pretty clearly that there's an appetite for something kind of different out there. So I said, OK, I'll give them something different again.
"But that kind of success encourages me that there is the hunger and appetite for people who really want to be taken somewhere else, so that's what I'm trying to do. I'm trying to provide them with a visceral and sense experience, so that by the time they walk into the temple (in the film's sacrifice scene) they are hopefully going out of their minds."
Which brings us to Apocalypto - another subtitled Gibson film, this one set in the Mayan civilisation at a time when it is facing decline.
For now, Gibson has elected to turn his back on mainstream American cinema to make films that challenge him as an artist. But he insists he is not intentionally shunning the major studios.
"I really don't think in those terms. I've just been financing the stuff myself because only a lunatic would do that," he laughs.
"There's a gamble aspect to it, in that you could fall flat on your face, which is always a possibility, but at some point you've got to try and put your money where your mouth is and say, 'I can do this'."
Gibson had his actors speak in a little-known ancient Mayan dialect, a symptom of his zeal for history.
"There's always this conceit amongst historians, particularly European historians, that history only began when they arrived, which of course is not the case.
"I thought that it would be interesting to tell a story from the perspective that wasn't told from the New World point of view.
"There's so much mystery surrounding the temples and the archeological findings, that it just really fires your imagination."
Gibson's epics, including his Oscar-winning Braveheart, tend to explore characters or societies facing social and moral dilemmas.
"Those crisis times are when the best stories surface, because people are asked to do things in times of crisis that go beyond their usual realm of experience. To me, those are the really interesting focal points. So I think you're looking for a story that's compelling and therefore you have to set it in a time and place where you see it happening, where you can inspect or investigate the nature of the human spirit in those particular circumstances."
Following his successes in such Hollywood blockbusters as the Lethal Weapon series, Gibson is in no rush to return to acting, despite the rumours.
"I just haven't felt the pressing desire to hop in front of the camera and tap dance," he says.
"It's not that I don't want to do it, it's just that it hasn't been on the menu for me for a while. When I was younger I used to think: boy, what would happen if I didn't work again and gee whiz that'd be terrible, but I since realised that it's not terrible at all."
He admits he enjoys "exploring the backside of the industry from a production and directorial point of view".
"I think the best thing I will have gleaned from all this is that whenever I do get in front of the camera again I'll be able to empathise with any director, no matter who it is, in order to help him with his vision."
Following a rocky year personally and an intense one creatively, Gibson says he is now "looking forward to just doing a little fishing and contemplating my own navel".
He won't disclose the location of his hunting waters, but he does hope to return to Australia at some point to work.
The last time Gibson was in front of an Australian camera was in 1985's Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.
"I think you have to find a worthy project to do there, and I think to actually work in Australia means that you can't just take any great story and move it there.
"Rather you need one that's somehow connected to the place, because I think there's such a soul in the ground."
Beyond fishing, Gibson says he has no idea what is in store for him professionally.
"I think I'll probably cook up some other weird idea, but I'm hoping that it won't be too bizarre and maybe something in the English language."

Italy Court slap age ban on Apocalypto

ROME (Reuters) - An Italian court has barred youths under 14 from seeing Mel Gibson's gory new film, "Apocalypto", overthrowing a decision by the country's censors who had deemed the movie fit for children.

The censors drew widespread criticism from politicians and parents' associations last week when they failed to impose any age restriction on the film, unlike most countries where it has been released.

The court's ban is temporary pending a January 17 hearing, a lawyer for Codacons, the consumer group which brought the case in favour of setting an age-limit, said on Monday.

"Even before hearing our arguments, they've slapped the ban to safeguard minors," Codacons lawyer Marco Ramadori told Reuters.

After Italy's court ban, only Russia is screening the film without an age restriction. The film is R-rated in the United States and has an age-18 certification in Britain and Germany.

Culture Minister Francesco Rutelli, who had written to the film's distributor in Italy recommending they alert the public to the violence of some of the scenes, met the censorship commission on Monday to review current standards.

Apocalypto, which hit Italian theatres on Friday, was the second most viewed film at the weekend after James Bond's latest adventure "Casino Royale".

No age limit for Apocalypto in Italy

"It's a work of art. It's a beautiful movie that tells the story without hiding anything. Wars are a part of life," said Gian Paolo Cugno, an Italian director who was among the board members who voted in favor of not giving the movie an age limit.

I try really hard to stay away from stories that get me pissed off. Technically I started this blog because I wanted a place to vent about Mels unfair treatment by the media during his DUI arrest in July.

I decided to changed, why contribute to the negativity, write good things about Mel. This story, well it got my blood boiling bright and early on a Sunday morning. Without giving you any links to the unworthy news story, a 29 year old woman is claiming that Mel is her father. She doesn't want his money, she claims, all that she wants is for him to acknowledge her as his daughter.

Just how stupid does she think we are? Not about the money, come on now at least be honest about it. Apparently neither the woman nor her mother thought of looking for Mel until now. It's not like she didn't know where he was, I mean Hell, even I know he doesn't really hide, you just have to know where to look. By the way the woman and her mother both live or lived in Australia. Aparently they didn't think to look for him there.

So this is what I think, Who cares! You're 29 years old with a child of your own, if he hasn't been your daddy all this time don't think if you are his daughter that your coming over for Christmas dinner because I'm pretty sure it won't happen.

He's a good guy, a decent guy, who if your proven to be his daughter will more than likely make sure your don't go without. I don't know if I'm upset at her for bringing this up now or the media. He's human, and I'm sure he's been around the block a few times and enjoyed every minute of it, but that is called living life.

I'm not crazy but this feels like a conspiracy sometimes by the media. It all goes back to The Passion, that's really when most of the negative press began. He's had some negative press over the years but with The Passion it went to another level.

He gets in trouble and six months later some people won't let it go. His movie hits number 1 when everyone said it wouldn't and the next thing you know some 29 year old woman wants her daddy. They keep digging and digging, it's not fair. He has a family, a wife, kids, stories like this are not just hurtful to him, but to them as well. Leave the man alone already. If this woman really believed that Mel Gibson was her father she could of went about it in a different way with no media attention what so ever.

Everything happens for a reason, even the bad things in life. Through our faith we will eventually be able to know what those reason's are.

I am forever a devoted Mel Gibson Fan!
